Navy denies blame for dead whales

THE navy has denied two of its ships may have contributed to two mass whale strandings in Tasmania.

Up to 130 long-finned pilot whales died after being found beached at Marion Bay, east of Hobart, early on Tuesday and early yesterday, said Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service.

The Royal Australian Navy said two mine countermeasure vessels were in North Bay, south of Marion Bay, between Tuesday and yesterday.

Greens senator Christine Milne said post-mortem examinations on the whales should examine if sonar signals from the ships were a factor.

A defence spokesman said the ships had been searching for the anchor from the historic Dutch vessel Heemskerck.
